APHC Cruise 2006 - Juneau, Alaska

The Prairie Home Companion cruise last year was so much fun that we decided to join Garrison and his crew again this year. The cruise sailed out of Seattle on Friday July 15 for Juneau. Unfortunately, Northwest Airlines got us to Seattle too late to connect with the boat and we had to chase it up to Juneau Saturday morning. We flew up and had Saturday to explore Juneau by ourselves.

Juneau is the state capital of Alaska but has a population of only about 35,000 people. It is only accesible by boat or airplane. Automobiles come and go by ferry boat. We stayed at the Hotel Baranof in the center of the old downtown area.

Sunday morning we decided to attand church services at Trinity Episcopal church and learned that it had burned to the ground earlier in the year. Services were held in the parish hall of St Ann's Catholic church. We enjoyed a nice service and some great bran muffins left over from a bake sale the previous day.

The Russian Orthodox church was nearby and undergoing renovation.
